What is Form W-2?
To be used by employees on their tax returns for income, Form W-2 gives them the information on their income and withholding. The form also gives the same information to both the IRS (and the Social Security Administration (SSA)).
The form must be completed for every worker whose income, Social Security, or Medicare taxes were withheld over the course of the calendar year. An exception exists for employees who’ve claimed that they are exempt from withholding tax on the W-4 forms that they must have provided to their employers prior to hiring.
Who is the person who uses Form W-2?
Employees aren’t eligible for Form W-2. This applies to freelancers, independent contractors and any other non-employees like vendors. If you wish to provide the information on income to these people then you must use Form 1099–MISC. Non-employees are required to obtain a 1099-MISC if they have received $600 or more during the preceding year.
Where can I get forms W-2?
You can get W-2 forms from your local office supply shop, or from your CPA, or you can access them online from the IRS. You can also obtain W-2 forms from most business tax preparation programs.
How to file Forms W-2
W-2 forms must be submitted together with a W-3 form to SSA by the 31st of January. The deadline for giving W-2 forms to employees is January. 31. The W-3 form is a transmittal document that is used to consolidate all information from the individual forms of W-2 into one total which can then be utilized by the SSA.
